Returns are accepted at the Main Library, Mt. Royal Branch Library, and West Duluth Branch Library
In this no-appointment process, please bring your library card and cell phone. If you do not have a cell phone, this is ok. There will be instructions outside of the library to help. Your full library card number will help ensure a quick and easy transaction! Please note that curbside pick-up is available for items that are currently held. Request items by placing holds on your account through our catalog, or by calling during readers advisory hours (see below.)
1. Pull up to one of the four designated spots near the Superior Street entrance of the library. Please do not block the bus stop. If you are coming by bus, on foot, or by bicycle, there are two designated spots (numbered 5 and 6) near the tables. If you do not have a cell phone, you can wait here for a staff member.
2. Follow the directions on the sign to let staff know you have arrived. Follow the link in your notification email, or text the number on the sign. This is not a telephone line. If you have questions, please call 218-730-4200 option 3.
3. Staff will communicate with you via text or message, check out your items, and deliver them to the table by the door.
4. Returns are accepted in both the Superior Street and Michigan Street bookdrops at the Main Library 24/7. Returns at branch libraries coming soon!
5. If you are converting your E-Access card to a regular library card, please show a library staff member your government-issued photo ID and proof of current address.

How do I place holds?

Can you look for specific items or provide reading suggestions?
Yes! Give us a call at 218-730-4200 for specific holds or reading suggestions. Choose option 4 for Youth Services and option 5 for Adult Services.
How will I know my hold items are ready for pickup?
You will receive an email notification. We are not sending mail notifications. Please update your account online with a current email address, as this is the preferred method of hold notification at this time.
To support social distancing efforts, we are offering curbside pick-up only and are operating with very limited staff. Staff will fill your holds placed online as quickly as possible; however, some materials requested may not be available, and wait times may be longer than usual. Thank you for your patience.
Can I use curbside pick-up for multiple accounts that all live in the same household?
Yes, you can pick them all up at once. Please have all library card numbers available for those household members.
Do I need a library card?
Yes, patrons must hold a valid library card to use curbside pick-up. Temporary e-access cards can be used to check out up to 5 items. Apply for an e-access card here
. Using curbside pick-up, you will be asked to verify your address and provide a photo ID. At that time, we will convert your temporary e-access card to a permanent library card.
What if I have mobility issues and cannot leave my vehicle?
If you have mobility issues, we can provide accommodation such as placing bagged items on the hood or in the trunk of your vehicle. Please request this when you text.
What materials are available for pick-up?
All physical materials currently on the shelf are available, including books, audiobooks, Sound Media Players, DVDs, etc.
What if I have replacement fees, overdue items, or I’m over the checkout limit?
Library staff can override fee restrictions and checkout limits. If you would like to pay your fees, our online payment system is still available.
Will you add curbside pick-up at the branches?
The Main Library is the only location we are offering curbside pick-up at this time.
How do I return materials?
Returns accepted 24/7 at the Main Library at both Michigan St. and Superior St. bookdrops. If you find the bookdrops are full, please hold on to your items until the next open day. Returns are also accepted at the branch libraries. The West Duluth Branch bookdrops are now located on the Grand Avenue side of the library.
What are you doing to protect the safety of patrons and library staff?
The contactless curbside pick-up model has been approved by the City of Duluth Safety and Training Officer. This model provides maximum social distancing for the safety of our patrons and our staff. Staff will use cloth face coverings in accordance with City of Duluth workplace safety policy and CDC guidelines.
Patrons and staff should not approach one another and should respect the need for social distancing. This may feel uncomfortable but is necessary to provide a safe, contactless pick-up service. Please remain in your vehicle until the previous patron has departed.
Are the books sanitized?
The items you requested have been sitting on the shelf for weeks and have not been touched during that time. The CDC says that the virus can live on cardboard and paper for 24 hours. It can live on plastic for 2-3 days. The amount of time these items have sat is more than sufficient to kill the virus. When our staff retrieved these items for pick-up they followed best practices for sanitation. If you are concerned, you may choose to let your materials sit for up to three days before accessing them.
